Kumano Shingu area

Kumano Hayatama Shrine sits at the foot of the mountain.
Two other shrines in Kumano-sanzan are top on of mountains.
It is the easiest place to go.
The nearest station is JR Shingu(新宮) station,
you can go to the shrine by foot in about 15 minuites.
Here in Shingu City there are two important Shrines.
One is Hayatama Shrine. Next one is Kannokura Shrine.
In fact, Kannokura shrine is very important.
Kannokura Shrine
There is a huge stone where the gods first came down.
This huge stone’s name is Gotobiki-Iwa.
After, the gods moved to Hayatama Shrine.
Shingu(新宮) means a new Shrine building.
Hayatama shrine = Shingu(=新宮)
Kannokura Shrine=Motomiya (=元宮Grand Shrine building)
The Shrine is in the middle of the mountain.
If you visit here, you have to go up 538 stairs.
Hayatama shrine
It is a beautiful shrine building in brilliant vermillion.
It is beautiful landscape with mountains behind.
No one knows when it was built.
But this shrine is written about
in the first Japanese history book “Nihon shoki”(720 year)
Nagi Tree
This tree is a Natural treasure.
The Nagi of Kumano Hayatama Shrine.
It is a sacred tree, about 1000 years old.
It is strange tree,
because it is a conifers but it has a leaf like a broadleaf.
The veins look like a bamboo leaf.
If you have a time, please walk around in the town.
You can see some nice buildings.
